Banka BioLoo Limited is a company dedicated to providing innovative solutions and services for sanitation infrastructure and fecal waste management. 

Their bio-toilets and bio-tanks for human waste treatment are accessible to schools, families, communities, railways, factories, work and construction sites, etc.

About Sanjay Banka

Sanjay Banka is the Executive Chairman of Banka Bio, and he is a strong advocate for Sustainable Development Goal 6. With a diverse academic background in sciences, humanities, human rights, law, and business management, he possesses a deep understanding of society, economy, and polity that provides him with inspiration to believe that change is possible.

On Track to Sanitation Revolution

Initially, Banka Bio started servicing sanitation systems in Railways. They saw that trains had an open defecation system wherein the fecal waste fell on the tracks. The railways, at that time, decided to upgrade its toilet systems, initially to ‘Controlled Discharge Toilet System’ (CDTS), and then Bio-toilet. The Company serviced the CDTS; and subsequently moved to the Bio-toilet system. These were the two initial stages in the journey for the last two decades.

The Journey Ahead

The team realized that more than 50% of the Indian population, especially in villages, lacked access to toilets and sewage systems. To solve this issue, the company installed bio-toilets, as Integrated Waste Mechanism System (IWMS). Banka Bio’s bio-toilets are very effective for the vast population of India, especially rural; over time, more research and operation progressed the technology to its current standards.

The company, also, introduced in-house designed and developed Fecal Sludge Treatment Plant (FSTP) that treats the waste evacuated from septic tanks and latrine pits. Another solution brought by Banka Bio is the Packaged Sewage Treatment Plant (PSTP). And for large residential and commercial complexes, Company provides STP as a service (SaaS).

Triumphs and Trials

The Company, initially, faced some obstacles. One of them was securing large-quantum funds to support expansion, and research & development efforts.

Also, educating the population and creating awareness about bio-toilets, posed some challenges. But, the company organized several campaigns and installed thousands of bio-toilets (bioloos) across India, including in remote areas; which slowly and gradually, helped people adapt themselves to these innovative solutions.

Future Plans and Vision Ahead

The journey of the last decade has brought success and growth at breakneck speed. Banka Bio envisions expanding its reach and installing more bio-toilets, apart from other solutions, in cooperation with governments, civil society, and businesses; wherever there is a need for proper sanitation infrastructure. They are investing in research to come up with more innovative products and services.
